Dachshund abuse

Most of the pictures in my daily dachshund calendar show cute dogs looking at the camera. However, I have recently seen two disturbing images that have me on the brink of calling PETA. In one a dachshund is riding a tricycle. With a dachshund's delicate back, this dog so not be doing such a wild and dangerous stunt.

While outrageous, this is nothing compared to the dachshund drinking the martini. That drink is as big as he is and so the alcohol level is obviously lethal. Plus, he could choke on the olives. These images are too disturbing for me to even show Pepper . . .

Speed Dating, Part Deux

So I went for my second foray into speed dating last night. This time there were a lot less guys and even less women (14 to 9-12). Unfortunately, the event took place at a dueling piano bar and I am absolutely petrified of dueling pianos (no seriously, I am). The actually speed dating took place in a separate room, so I managed to escape seeing any pianos with duelers playing them.

But I digress, overall the evening wasn't as much fun as last time. Kristi encouraged me to be less picky this time and I really tried, but the odds were stacked against me . . .There were a lot more "unique" individuals including a highly disproportionate number of overweight, Southern good ole boys (like over half). One of them informed me right away that he has worked with 2 Oscar winners and gotten a psych degree to kill time until his film career took off. He's going to grad school next, so apparently no one else is impressed he worked with 2 Oscar winners either.

Another guy was the epitome of slimy smoothness. He laid it on thick, telling me I was the only one he wanted to talk to there, how great my personality was, and other crap. He also touched me a couple of times. Unfortunately, he was the first person I talked to after the break, so I was stuck with him for 15 minutes of agony. I actually wanted to take a shower after talking to him.

Even though I was trying to be less picky this time, I actually put down only 3 yes votes with 2 of them really being yes and one being a less picky yes. When I got my results this afternoon, the two real yes votes agreed with me and the other guy didn't (which relieves me to no end because the more I thought about it, the less I wanted to go out with him).

Now, I'm not holding my breath about actually going out on dates with any of these guys since that didn't happen after last time, but I'm glad I got two quality matches. Plus as everyone keeps pointing out to me (or probably reminding me), I'm not going to play any Dr. Phil mind games.

The funny part is the guys who flirted with me most were the bartenders . . .

NBC thinks we're dumb

So I was cruising through NBC's Olympic website's tv listing where they tell you to go to avoid seeing results. The only problem is right there in the left hand column is the current medal standings. Now it's not like the US has a gazillion medals, so people are going to notice when there might be a couple more than there were yesterday. Kind ruins the point of going to that part of the site to avoid the results when you see them there anyway . . . Just the usability/user experience nerd in my talking . . .

Oh the shame

Picture the scene, 8pm on the Thursday after Valentine's Day, the local Lowe's Foods.

I've stopped in because I'm craving chocolate and head right to the clearance candy isle. Of course there's a store employee standing there restocking and I don't want to make it too obvious that I came to the store with the sole purpose of buying 1/2 priced candy, so I keep on walking down the isle and kill a few minutes looking at other food that actually has some nutritional value.

Finally, the isle is clear and I head back to check out the selection before settling on a box of Russell Stovers assorted chocolates in a lovely red foil wrapping. Then I head to self checkout because once again, I don't want to point out that the sole purpose of my trip is 1/2 priced chocolate since I didn't have a boyfriend to get me whole priced chocolate on Tuesday.

I scan my rewards card and then scan the chocolate, holding my breath to see if the discount does in fact ring up. Big surprise, my stealth mission is ruined because the stupid computer does not register the discount. I reluctantly press the help button and over trots a high school boy who no doubt got his girlfriend full priced chocolates and a stuffed bear holding a heart.

The good news is he seems to know right away what the problem is, meaning that other people have been in buying the sale candy too. He quickly corrects the price while I turn the same shade as the box's foil wrapping and mumble thanks. After quickly shoving the cheap treats into a bag, I make a hasty retreat to my car.

Fortunately back home, Pepper doesn't know what I'm eating and neither do the judges on Dancing with the Stars.

I should write a dating book

As I lamented earlier, none of the guys from speed dating ever worked out, partially my fault perhaps. Still, I've taking small actions that may cause cosmic/karma reactions and have somebody actually call me. In short, when I acted like I was going to be going out on dates, I didn't. Maybe if I act like I'm not planning any dates, they will magically appear.

For instance, I deleted all of the emails from my matches from my inbox and numbers from my cell. If I erase them from my life, then they'll call or email me.

I also signed up for another round of speed dating in a couple of weeks. Surely all it will take is for me to go and spend another 35 bucks and somebody will call.

Finally, I had french fries for lunch today. If I go off my diet for a meal and don't lose a 1/4 of a pound and feel fat, they'll call and say they can't live without me.

Maybe I'll spend my Friday night working Crisco into my pores so that I break out like a 14 year old. Knowing my luck, my skin will be glowing and no one will call.

I bitch about how guys take so long to call me and then turn around and play games with them. Dr. Phil told me to tell guys I was busy when they asked me out. Being the psychobabble junkie that I am, I did just that. Everyone told me not to, but I did anyway.

The only problem is that the guys don't call me back.

Next time, I'll have to admit that I'm sitting home on a Saturday night with Pepper watching BBC mysteries . . .

So I'm googling myself (hey, we all do it) and a link came up for an article I apparently wrote way back freshman year of college when I was on The Tartan for all of like 2 months. I don't remember writing it, but I'm pretty sure I was the only Heather Frantz on the Tartan that fall, not to mention at CMU the entire 4 1/2 years I was there. Very odd, especially since this is not The Tartan's website, but some wire service . . .

What does Dr. Phil say about this?

So last night when I was watching Bleak House on PBS (awesome miniseries by the way), I noticed that in the Charles Dickens era people get engaged really fast. Like they look at each other and get engaged. Flash forward to today and it takes guys days to email me from speed dating this past weekend. In the amount of time guys take from receiving the speed dating matches email to actually composing a 3 sentence note to me, people back in the olden days got engaged.

Talk amongst yourselves.

All the cool kids are doing it

OK, so the great speed dating event took place this past Friday to mixed results. The event lasted about 3 hours and I spent ~4 minutes talking to each of the 18 guys (there were supposed to be 21, but 3 losers didn't show).

Each of the conversations mostly went like this.
-Are you from the Triangle originally?
-What do you do?
-What do you like to do in your spare time?
- Bell rings

After 4 minutes, you get 30 seconds to write notes about the person while you are sitting right across from them, awkward. Fortunately, the notes were made in a binder so you could hide what you were writing. Some guys didn't get this though and were openly making notes about me right in front me. Being the humble person that I am, I didn't look.

After doing this for 3 hours, my jaw hurt from the talking, I had a headache from the noise, and could only remember a couple of the guys. I ended up being generous with my choices and said "yes" to 7 out of the 18 (a decision I now regret).

Come Saturday afternoon, I got an email from the speed dating company with my matches, a total of three, an average results according to the dateswitch website. The good news was I matched with the 2 guys I found to be the most fun (Kristi agreed too) and one guy neither of us could remember (thus my regret about being generous above). My notes on him consisted of "Lexus" and "Southern".

The reason I'm saying this speed dating thing has given me mixed results is because 2 day later, I still haven't heard from any of them. I'm assuming they're all playing cool and waiting the requisite 3 days to email, but if I don't hear anything by Tuesday evening, I may swallow my pride and email the two cool guys.

In conclusion, I like speed dating a lot more than online websites. You meet around the same number of people (normally the speed dating events have around 10-15 guys), spend the same amount of money, and waste a lot less time and energy. If none of these guys works, I'll probably sign up for another event. Plus, it also really helps me polish my Dr. Phil dating do's and don'ts.

It's the worst time of the year

When I walked into Target yesterday, I realized that it is the time of year I hate the most - commercialism Valentine's Day. Lasting from January 1st to February 14th, this time of year, it always reminds me how I'm single and will probably consume at least one heart shaped chocolate container (not really helping me to solve the single thing).

It might be different if the holiday only lasted one day instead of 45 and it was shoved down our throats every time we walk into any kind of store. Also, I doubt it ever lives up to anyone's expectations. It's just too much pressure for one day in the dead of winter.

Still, I will be at those same stores the day after to pick up 1/2 off chocolate and red decor for my apartment.

I'm sorry Steelers

Dear Steelers,
I'd just like to let you know that I'm very sorry I ever doubted you. After the 3 miserable loses in a row, I started to become disenchanted. I was so depressed, that I didn't even go to the bar today to watch the game. Then you go and play your hearts kick and the Bears' ass. I did watch the play by play on espn.com though. Even better, both the Chargers and the Chiefs lost today, putting you in sixth place in the AFC and a wild card berth (for this week at least). I'm sorry I was acting like a fairweather fan.

Now some caveats though. While both San Diego and Kansas City have rough games (including one against each other) and your schedule is considerably easier (2 of the teams have only won about 1/3 of their games), please don't mess this up. We all realize that Indy is going to win the Super Bowl and Peyton Manning will be MVP, but it's a matter of pride to make the playoffs.

Yours Truly,
Heather

Look at the movies she been in, she was a total bitch in Mean Girls, sweet in The Notebook, a horror movie heroine in Red Eye, and funny opposite Luke Wilson in Wedding Crashers. Now she's in The Family Stone and from the trailers, appears to be the punk chick daughter. Talk about a range of roles.

I hate her and want to be her best friend at the some time. Sigh.
