I'm not the same person I was in high school . . .
Going back for Thanksgiving last week meant seeing mementos of the past 10 years of my life within a couple of days. I saw some old high school friends Friday night, saw CMU on Saturday, and then came back to Raleigh on Sunday. I've never experienced these three eras of my life in such a short period of time before and it got me thinking about how I've evolved as a person.
When I saw someone for the first time in over 6 years on Saturday night and he didn't look or act as I remembered, I was kind of shocked. The change in appearance was an obvious change from high school, but my other friends have since told me that this guy's personality is same as back then. How could I have missed that? I always pride myself on being able to read people pretty quickly, but here was someone who I spent hundreds of hours with in class and totally missed a big aspect of his personality. It just made me realize that not only do I have more insight about people, but also that I now have more confidence in myself that I can even step back and make these assessments without being blinded by other issues (like a teenage crush). Deep.

Pet Peeve of the Day
Today on one of the flights, the girl behind me was on her cell the entire time the flight boarded. While it was annoying and I now know she doesn't call guys, guys call her, it wasn't quite at pet peeve status. When she made her next call and said that her "Mommy" was going to pick her up, I thought maybe it was a one time thing. When she went on to say "Mommy" twelve more times in the same call, it officially reached pet peeve status.
Keep in mind this was a girl flying home from college. She's considered a legal adult, can vote and quite possibly drink legally and yet refers to her mother the same way she did when she was 2. It's ok to say Mommy when it's a time of emotional upheaval, but not in everyday conversation. Maybe she'll stop when she's old enough to rent a car . . .

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times . . .
Congrats to Hines Ward for becoming the Steelers all-time leading receiver during the game last night. Hinesy is the heart and soul of the team and a class act to boot (especially compared to TO). Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.
It was a good thing he broke the record early in the game though, because he may not be catching too many passes in the next game with Maddox back in. The Steelers finally get back on top of the AFC North and now this happens. The Steelers will only be able to do so many trick plays next Sunday against Baltimore and then Tommy is going to have to throw interceptions. Maybe a miracle will happen and Batch or Big Ben will be ok, but I'm not holding my breath. The only good news is that the Bengals are playing the Colts and may lose too . . .

Ebay is taking over the world . . .
I was just spellchecking my previous post and it picked up Ebay, not a big deal right? Afterall, that's kind of weird word, so of course it might raise flags.
Only problem - it was telling me I spelled Ebay wrong. I went into other programs and found that Word and Gmail both tell me I was spelling it wrong. Apparently it's EBay or eBay. What is the world coming to? Why did I waste my time going into other programs to see what they did . . .

Dating tips for men, Part 2
A couple of weeks ago, I had a post about online dating tips. Now that I've finished going out with the most recent batch of men I met online, I've noticed a few more things they're doing wrong. Enjoy.
1. Say you're meeting your date for the first time. When a girl who resembles the picture online walks into the bar and is obviously looking around for someone and then smiles at you when you make eye contact, get off your barstool and ask her if she's meeting someone. Don't turn around and go back to watching tv and act like you're not waiting for someone. Really don't continue to sit there for 5 more minutes while the girl sits down at the table by herself and continues to look around and then finally decide that maybe you should ask her if she's waiting for someone. Making someone squirm and think she has been stood up is not a good first impression.
2. Say you're meeting your date for the first time. Don't be more than 5 minutes late, really don't be 15 minutes late. After 15 minutes, you're date is probably on her way out as you're coming in. Once again, making someone squirm and think she has been stood up is not a good first impression.
3. Say you're meeting your date for the first time. Take a shower/shave/wash your hair at some point within 12 hours before the date. Also, make sure you're wearing clean clothes. It's perfectly fine to wear jeans, but knock it up a couple of levels by wearing a nice shirt, not a gross t-shirt. Surely you own at least one nice shirt, if not, go shopping. Ebay has some great deals, just ask my mother.
4. The cardinal rule of posting pictures in your profile: Do not post a picture that makes you look cuter/more normal looking than you really are. It's ok to post a picture that does not do you justice since it'll be a pleasant surprise for your date. Note: if you have a front tooth that is significantly longer than the rest of your teeth, be sure to highlight this in a photo.
5. After the first date, don't email your date the next day extolling her virtues and asking her out again only to then drop off the face of the earth and not return her call or email. Sure, you may have made an idiot out of yourself by repeatingly calling an ingredient on your sandwich brussel sprouts instead of bean sprouts (really, two very different foods) and made other comments that fall into the "not the brightest bulb in the chandelier" genre. Still maybe you're date is willing to put aside (apparently there are merits to being smarter one in a relationship, but that's a whole other post). Still, very sketchy when you disappear after being all interested. If you suddenly appear again in a couple of weeks, you're call/email with certainly be ignored.

Week 10 rankings
Stupid ESPN, even though the Broncos had a bye last week, the site's contributors moved the team above the Steelers so that they are now at No.3. Everybody else stayed the same as last week, CBS Sports has them at 3 and SI.com has them at no. 2. I guess I shouldn't complain when Patriots fans have to deal with their team being in the middle of the pack after dominating for years.
I just looked at Indy's schedule so far this year and I'm honestly not that impressed with their 8-0 record. With the exception of the Patriots, who have been deluged with injuries, all of the other wins come against ok to bad teams. This week's opponent is Houston, one of the worst teams in the league. After that come the Bengals and the Steelers, two much more formidable teams. See if their record is still perfect after those games.
One last note, I saw today in the Post Gazette that Kordell Stewart was cut from the Ravens' squad. He's still playing football?

K-Fed aka Mr. Britney Spears aka Kevin Federline's new song has been leaked. Now, I'll be the first to admit I know nothing at all about rap and that Will Smith is my favorite rapper, so I have no taste when it comes to that genre. Still, even I can tell it sucks. The link includes some hiliarious quotes from the album's producer who needs a reality check.
At one point, he calls the papparazzi his own personal slang term of "Pavarotti." I don't think it's a slang term, I think he just doesn't know the difference between the two . . .

Is TV kind of sucky this year?
Now that we're about half way into the new television season, I'm noticing an alarming trend: a lot of show are sucking . . . Desperate Housewives, The OC, Alias, Amazing Race. And none of the new shows are all that great (Did anyone else see the absurd repeat of Criminal Minds last night?)
Don't get me wrong, some shows are still awesome (Lost, VM, Grey's, even OTH has been better recently), but it seems like last year was such a great year for TV that this year is paling in comparison.
I guess what pains me most is that some of my favorite shows are kind of boring. A lot of people I talk to say they watch DH, but they really look forward to Grey's. The OC hasn't been right since the first season, I think maybe Summer and Seth got together too soon. Thank goodness for Julie Cooper! Finally, J.J. Abrams is off making MI:3 with Tom Cruise and not dedicating his time to the probable final season of Alias.
Anybody else feel like these shows aren't as good as before or has Tivo somehow warped my judgment?

More bad news for Pittsburgh
Ben had surgery this morning to remove some torn cartilage which means he'll definitely be out this Sunday and possibly miss the next Sunday against the Browns. Bettis has also been downgraded from questionable to doubtful for this Sunday's game.
I realize that the Packers are 1-6 and all, but I'm still nervous about this game! Cowher said that Ben could have put off the surgery, but that now was a good time. I have to agree, it really the only time on their schedule when they face two lackluster teams in a row. I just hope everybody is healthy for the MNF showdown with Indy after Thanksgiving . . .

Rankings for the 1st week of November
Despite (or maybe because of) the grinding performance on MNF, the Steelers maintained and even slightly improved their place in the rankings. ESPN has them ranked at 2 (same a last week), CBS Sports has them ranked at 3 (they were 5 last week), and finally Sports Illustrated has then also at No. 2 (same as last week)
